"The Boy" is a 2016 horror film directed by William Brent Bell. It stars Lauren Cohan as Greta Evans, an American woman who takes a job as a nanny for a wealthy British family. However, she soon discovers that she is not actually caring for a child, but a life-sized porcelain doll named Brahms.
Greta is initially skeptical about the job and does not take Brahms seriously. However, she soon realizes that the parents treat the doll as if it were alive, following a set of strict rules to care for it. Greta is left alone with Brahms when the parents go on vacation, and strange events start to occur, making her question whether the doll is actually possessed or if someone else is in the house.
As the story unfolds, Greta learns about the history of Brahms, who was the son of the family that previously lived in the house. Brahms died in a fire, and his grieving parents created the doll to cope with their loss. The parents believe that Brahms' spirit now resides in the doll, and they continue to care for it as if it were their real son.
Greta eventually discovers that the strange occurrences were orchestrated by Brahms himself, who is revealed to be alive and living in the walls of the house. He had been manipulating events to make Greta believe that the doll was possessed. The film ends with Greta managing to escape Brahms, but it is implied that Brahms will continue to haunt and torment anyone who dares to come near him.
"The Boy" received mixed reviews from critics but was a commercial success, grossing over $74 million worldwide. It has since spawned a sequel, "Brahms: The Boy II," released in 2020.
